Free Virus Scan Information.

With proliferation of computer viruses, worms, spyware and spam, periodically scanning your computer has become a necessity. There are many virus scanners available, some of them commercial and some are free.

The commercial antivirus programs (such as Norton AntiVirus, Panda Titanium Antivirus and McAfee VirusScan) generally offer many features in addition to simple scans. These features may include scanning email attachments for viruses, spyware detection, automatic removal of worms, firewall functionality and more.

Some people find these extras useful, however many feel that commercial antivirus products are too intrusive. For example, you may find that your computer becomes less responsive, tries to connect to the Internet without asking for your permission, etc. Some older computers become extremely slow due to the antivirus processes constantly running in the background. In most cases it is possible to change program settings of the antivirus program so that it acts less intrusively and does not significantly slow down the computer. Unfortunately, some users get frustrated and shut down the antivirus tools altogether. This is definitely not the right way to deal with the issue.

The good news is that some companies provide online versions of their antivirus products. For many users a periodical free virus scan can be an important part of keeping their computer healthy. Although not as feature-rich as their full-version cousins, these tools allow you to scan your computer for viruses without the need to install and run their commercial products. In addition, these online virus scanners are usually up-to-date. Even better, you can use these tools free!

Even though you don't have to buy and install a software program in a conventional sense, when you click on an online virus scanner, most likely it will start by downloading an ActiveX control to your browser. This download will take several minutes if you are using a dial-up connection.

Since new viruses or their variations appear practically every day, oftentimes one tool may find a virus that another tool is not yet aware of. If you are especially concerned about computer viruses, it may be a good idea to periodically use a couple or more antivirus programs. For example you could buy and install Norton AntiVirus and use it in combination with the Panda online scanner.
